EDIFICATION This week's article intends to emphasize our attendance to our upcoming Annual Tent Meeting. We would like to emphasize such attendance to this event for three reasons: it supports our heritage, our youth, and our preachers. First of all, our Woodland Hills Annual Tent Meeting provides a flashback into our heritage. My parents were some who always enjoyed visiting other churches when traveling. As their children, the four of us often found ourselves participants in such a habit. I remember once stopping at an unknown country location and sitting under a tent, with hard bench seats, grass for a floor, bare light bulbs - with bugs galore - singing and worshipping with my family, listening to a sermon from some African-American minister. I do not think that I was more than seven or eight years old, but that was the only time in my life that I heard brother Marshal Keeble speak - in person. And I owe such a memory to our heritage of the "tent meeting" in the church. Next, our Annual Tent Meeting supports our youth. Say what we want to as adults, and brag about the events all we can as parents, the fact is that the conception, coordination, and execution of this event has always rested with Taft and our youth. Jesus said that he would be "led by a small child" and such is certainly true with regard to this annual event at Woodland Hills. Our youth choose the song leaders, the speakers, the time and the place. They even coordinate the food and refreshments. How about that? What else for us to do but to show up? Finally, our support of this event somehow supports our preaching team's combined efforts. Personally, I have always been impressed by the way that Bobby O'Dell initially greeted this particular event. From the very first, he not only supported it; but rather, he "embraced" it with enthusiasm - enthusiasm for both Taft and our youth. The way these two ministers support each other, labor together, and give place to our youth for this particular event should serve as an example of selflessness to us all. In conclusion, we need to support this annual event for the three reasons given above. But especially we should come together in selfless support of the gospel in our community. Certainly, our Annual Tent Meeting is a unique, valued, and blessed part of our Woodland Hills calendar. For the Elders, Dick Holt
A SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR OUR GRADUATES Graduation is both an exciting and challenging time in life. This is a time of many changes and opportunities. At any age, life at its best is lived for God. God's wisdom for those about to graduate is found in the Bible. The book of Proverbs is rich in God's teaching for those in this time of transition. Respect the teaching and instruction of your parents. "My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother." (Pro. 1:8) Those who do not heed the advice of their parents bring misery to themselves. Resist the company of sinners. "My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent." (Pro. 1:10) There is no way to describe the harm done to a life that makes the decision to associate with those who practice evil. Receive wisdom and understanding. "My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my command within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom...you will understand the fear of the Lord." (Pro. 2:1-5) Through receiving God's word and treasuring his commandments you receive both wisdom and understanding. Recognize the value of God's law. "My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings." (Pro. 4:20) God blessed the obedient and punishes the disobedient. Refrain from wickedness. "A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother." Wickedness would bring grief to your parents. Wickedness profits nothing and produces much misery. Refuse wine and strong drink. "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whosoever is led astray by it is not wise." (Pro. 20:1) Alcohol and other drugs have ruined many graduates. Let us all refuse that which destroys internally, externally, and eternally. Realize the value of a good name. "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches." (Pro. 22:1) Your honesty and integrity will give you a good name. Do nothing to destroy that name - work hard, pay your debts, be fair, keep it real! Rule your own spirit. "Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls." (Pro. 25:28) Graduates please hear me! If you do not control your spirit - temper, actions, thoughts, etc. - it will control you.
