IS THE PACKAGING IMPORTANT TO YOU?

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months, he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer’s showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was what he wanted.

As graduation day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man’s name embossed in gold.

Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible? He stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but he realized his father was very old and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since graduation.

Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away and willed him all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.

When he arrived at his father’s house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father’s important papers and saw the new Bible, just as he had left it years ago.

Withe tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. His father had carefully underlined a verse - Matthew 7:11: "And if ye, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father which is in heaven, give those who ask Him?"

As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer’s name, the same dealer who had the sports car her desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the word...PAID IN FULL.

How many times do we miss God’s blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?

5TH/6TH GRADE PROJECT
Attention:
Veterans and family members of veterans. The fifth and sixth grade class is trying to put something together to honor our Woodland Hills veterans. This Sunday there will be flyers for members to take and fill out if they have a family member that was or is in the armed forces. We would like to acknowledge all of our past and present Woodland Hills members. If possible, locate a picture or two in uniform to go with the flyer. You will be asked to give it to me, Kim Thompson, in Room 2, or one of our fifth and sixth grade students. You will receive your picture back. I need these by October 22nd. If there is anyone familiar with creating a slide show and would like to help, please let me know. I will be gone October 8 - 15, but I still want the class to continue working on the project. We don’t want to leave anyone out.
                 Thanks,
                  Kim Thompson

ITEMS NEEDED FOR UKRAINE

There are several congregations of the churches of Christ who are combining their efforts to ship materials to the Ukraine where so many of the families are desperately poor without even the necessities of life.  Kathy Cadden, Dee Close's sister, has asked Woodland Hills for help in providing the following list of items that will be compiled in family boxes and given to families who are without the essential items of life.  (Below is the list of items for us to provide.)
75 pkgs. clothes pins
75 pkgs. clothes lines
75 relatively good paring knives
large (32oz) bottles of Dawn dishwashing liquid
75 pkgs. of 3oz soap (deodorant soap, NOT Ivory, which does not last as long)
75 boxes of Band-Aids
75 pkgs. writing pens
75 nail clippers (2 for $1.00 at dollar stores)
75 hair brushes
75 tubes of Aim toothpaste (about .88 cents at Wal-Mart or $1.00 at Dollar Tree)
flat bed sheets - all sizes, new or used
300 relatively good quality toothbrushes (this may be their only toothbrush for a long while; there are some packages of 10 toothbrushes for $1.00, but they don't last very long)
150 new, thin bath towels in dark colors (about $1.50 at Wal-Mart or $2.50 at Fred's), they need to be thin towels because most of these people have to wash their clothes by hand and then hang them out to dry; the thick towels that we use are too thick; also they need to be dark colors because the water over there turns anything light to gray; the dark colors will minimize the graying effect

Freed-Hardeman Scholarship Fund

We will be having a special contribution on Sunday, October 8th, for our students who are currently attending Freed-Hardeman.  This is an excellent way for us to show our support for them.  Our contributions in the past have been a great success and have helped our students to put a "dent" in the large cost that a college education carries.  It is really special that we can contribute in such a way to help those of our number who do not receive assistance from their parents.  We have some students from Woodland Hills who receive no help at all from their families.  This contribution is NOT TO GIVE THE STUDENTS A FREE RIDE.  It is to help supplement some of the loans and assistance that they have already applied for.  It is our hope that you will be able to set aside some funds for this special day.  Keep them in your prayers and make sure that you let them know just how much their church family here cares for them while they are away.
