BLESSED ARE THE MEEK
There are some words that have escaped the hearts for some, and one of
those words is "meek." Unfortunately, it is viewed by many in and out of the
church as a sign of weakness or spinelessness. Some view a meek person as
nothing less than a doormat for others to step on. I hope to prove in this short
article that a meek person holds one of the virtues required by God. Jesus said,
" Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth" Matthew
5:5). What does it really mean to be meek? It means one is, mild tempered,
not easily provoked or irritated, patient under injuries, without vanity or
haughtiness." The meek person(s) will exhibit a special strength under any
circumstance.
How and where will meekness be found? The virtues of meekness in life
is under consideration here. The where and how is found in our submission
towards God. Such a person has placed himself or herself under God’s control
(cf. James 4:7). A self-willed person will be just the opposite towards
God. Jesus declared His meekness in Matthew 11:29-30. His life was under God’s
control (John 5:30; John 6:38; John 8:50). He lived a God controlled life. The
virtues of meekness are seen in lowliness towards oneself (Ephesians 4:2-3). You
will always find the meek to be one of self-control as mentioned by Solomon in
Proverbs 16:32. James speaks of such a person in James 1:21. Abraham personally
demonstrated lowliness in his life. I urge you to study Galatians 6:1; 2nd
Timothy 2:25 and Titus 3:2. When you find one who is in submission to God,
lowliness towards self, and shows gentleness to others, you are able to see the
virtues of a meek life.
Consider the values of a meek life. God requires and highly values such
a quality. Peter, in 1st Peter 3:4 tells us the meek person is of
great value. What if Abraham, Jesus and countless others had not been
meek? Well, they would not have been submissive, lowly towards self
nor would they have been gentle. Jesus personifies the quality or values
of meekness. Matthew 11:29-30 proves Him to be so. If we (Christians) are going
to be like Christ, we too must be meek. Thank God for His Word–the Bible. The
Word of God is able to produce meekness in every Christian. Study Galatians
5:22-23 and 1st Timothy 6:11.
What will meekness do for us? It will allow us the victories of
life! It will make an heir of us (Romans 8:17; cf. 2nd Peter
3:13-14). In essence, it will make us Christ-like (Matthew 11:29-30). We will be
"true" Christians that live a life of meekness.
Our desires as members of the church of Christ should be to understand
the virtues of meekness, appreciate its values, and do all we can to obtain the
victories which accompany a meek life. Now, the question is, "Are you a meek
person?"
