Keys To A Happy Life

In the book of Philippians Paul offers several keys to happiness. Some people are happy; others actually work at making themselves and those around them miserable. Let us all use these keys and learn to be happy.

Receive grace and peace from Jesus Christ: "Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:2) Always focus on the good things of life, especially on forgiveness and hope.

Remember to be thankful: "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now." (Philippians 1:3-5) Be thankful for other people and for the good they do. Be thankful for salvation, the church, and the opportunity to serve.

Remain humble and have the spirit of Christ: "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 2:5) If you think too highly of self you may get to feel sorry for yourself. Both attitudes will make you miserable. Those with a humble, Christ-like spirit find happiness regardless of circumstances.

Renounce complaining and murmuring: "Do all things without complaining and disputing." (Philippians 2:14) Those who hold grudges and complain about every little slight will always be miserable. You also guarantee yourself and others misery if you think you are entitled to special privileges.

Rejoice in your relationship with the Lord: "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4) True happiness belongs to those who are "in Christ.' Christians have much to rejoice about, especially forgiveness.

Realize God's care for your life: "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19) Money is not the answer. God is the answer to man's needs.

Do not feel sorry for yourself. Life up your head and heart. Be thankful and enjoy the peace of God. "Be anxious in nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)

CAN YOU HELP?
Dear Brethren,
It has been brought to the attention of the Elders that there is an opportunity to allow God’s love to flow though us to help someone in need. You may have read about a little boy in the Millington area that was badly burned recently. The family is very hesitant to ask for help, but yet the bills and unforeseen expenses are piling up. The Elders have asked that anyone who is willing to contribute to this very worthy cause to please give the contribution to one of them or to myself. This family will know God’s love through your generosity.

A Sun-Burned Bible

The other day I was driving to work and observed the back window of the car in front of me. What I noticed was pretty much the usual: an old baseball cap, a bumper sticker that I do not recall and a sun-worn Bible. That Bible got me to thinking, did it look ragged because it was used or because it baked in the sun everyday? Was it used much (or little) as the Family Bible on many coffee tables throughout the nation? Was the man driving the car really religious or just putting up a front? The truth is, I don’t have a clue. But, I can look at my own situation and ask myself the same question. Where is my Bible right now and when was the last time I read it?

Well, at the time, my Bible was in the trunk of my car for some reason. I started thinking, "What would others think of me if they knew that my Bible was in my trunk?" It would appear that I was not very dedicated to God’s Word. And then I thought, "How dedicated am I? Did I read my Bible before bed the night before? What I am trying to get at is not a lecture on the preservation and placement of your $65.00 Bible. What is important is how often it is used.

Consider the words of the Psalmist in Psalms 119:16, "I will delight myself in thy statues: I will not forget thy word."  Have we forgotten God’s Word today? If we have, let’s take the time to open our Bibles and read about the extraordinary things God has placed for all of us! Let us live by these words! "I will never forget thy precepts, for with them thou has quickened me" (Psalm 119:93). I pray that all of our Bibles are wore-out. Just make sure they are worn from use and not from sunburn.
